其实，zoo是zoological garden（动物园）或者zoological park（动物公园）的简称。

那么，zoological又是什么意思呢？它是一个形容词，表示“与动物学有关”的意思。而动物学（zoology）则是一个名词，表示“研究动物的科学”的意思。

但zoo的终极词源则是希腊语 zoiow ‘animal’（动物）。1829年伦敦动物协会（ the Zoological Society of London ） 在里真茨公园（Regent’s Park ）的北侧展出野生动物，并将此地称作 the Zoological Gardens ，不久又简称之为 the Zoological ，到了1840年以后进而缩略为 zoo 。
